In
Winston-Salem
there is currently no place that will house homeless
mothers, under 18, and their children. The Children’s Home
is creating a new program called
My Aunt’s House.
This new program will provide homeless teen mothers and
their children with a home, basic necessities, adult
supervision and guidance, as well as the services needed to
grow a healthy, strong family. At this moment there are
renovations being made on the Reynold’s Cottage, also known
as the Baby Cottage. For the time being, the 5 resident’s of
My Aunt’s House
are staying at the Stockton Cottage.
When a mother and child move into
My Aunt’s House
they will be offered a range of services including:
§
Life Skills that will be taught to the mother that will help
prepare her for a more independent life style.
§
The teens will progress towards their high school diploma,
GED, or preparing for the work world.
§
Counseling and education to prevent further pregnancies.
Working towards maturity and stability.
§
Access to: therapists, psychiatrists, the on-campus nurse,
Child development education offered to help keep the
children developmentally on target.
Access to child care so mothers can move towards
educational and career goals, to create a more stable
home life for their families.
